For almost 200 years, this 1780 building was known as the Petitbone Tavern. It now operates as Abigail's. The location is rumored to be haunted by Mrs. Abigail Petitbone. According to local legend, her husband wasn't around too much, so Abigail began a romantic affair with another man. Her husband one day came home to find her with her new lover and he killed the two of them with an ax. Her spirit has been seen by both visitors and employees, mostly near the second-floor ladies' bathroom. Others believe that the ghost that lingers the place is not Abigail, but that of a young child.

  • The jumping glassware

This was in the early 1980s. My friend and I were waiting for a table to have dinner and were in the bar/lounge area. As we sat there a large glass tumbler that was about a foot away from the edge of the table jumped right off and onto the floor. We called an employee over and he just laughed and said..oh yes, that's our resident ghost Mrs.Pettibone. He t told us the footsteps and lights going off and on. I definitely know its haunted by an earthbound ghost..i.e one that hasn't crossed over.

  • Experiences…

A white form of some sort on the 2nd floor Bar TV. Before I took the photo - the TV screen was black. It was the day after Thanksgiving 2022 and it was a rainy day. And in the same photo there was an image on the wooden post. “Nice” and “Spooky” - Love it !

  • I lived at the Inn and was part of the Chart House conversion

Had a room across from Abigail’s the lights would constantly go out as well the water. After we started the renovation we ran 5 strand wire through the employees room and main offices however when the electrician went to wire it up only 3 strands were there. Before opening we were washing dishes and we heard a crash down stairs when we checked it out all the glass doors were flipped in the opposite direction and the glass was broken. Not to mention when the business was cranking we would lose power in the broiler area which was below Abigail’s room FYI there is no death date on her tombstone. just saying

  • No One Else is Here

I was in the Pettibone Tavern / Chart House as it was called. My father was a part owner. so we were there alone on a weekend. We could here someone walking upstairs. When my Dad came out of the kitchen, we asked him who was walking around upstairs. He told us, "There is no one else here." We left without investigating further.

  • OLd Chart House is really haunted!

All the stories seem to ski over the fat that when Chart House bought the Inn, they found all the original paintings of Abigail stacked in the basement with the head areas of the paintings cut out... Later they found the pieces cut out in a drawer and had them re-attached. Today you can see where the paintings were cut out then returned. in 1992 I was on a job in Hartford and spent several evenings at the restaurant/bar Chart House. One snowy night I was sitting at the bar on the 2nd floor with three people, only a couple of tables dining because of the foul weather. After hearing the stories from the bartender we were talking when a man came to the bartender and said "I don't want to start any trouble, but there's a woman in the Men's Room" which happens to be where the original bedroom of the home was and the site of Abigail's murder! After a laugh I got ready to leave and couldn't find my glove... no one had moved and we all looked around the floor and couldn't find it. Two minutes later I looked on the ground and there it was! Very visible, no way to miss it. time to go home!

  • Picture shook near hostess

My father was using the bathroom upstairs. I was waiting in the lobby area. The picture shook on the wall. We all ran out. Dad yelled something about monogrammed towels!
